AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate Cheat Sheet (SOA-C03)

Every CloudWatch alarm pattern, Systems Manager tool, DR strategy, and VPC diagnostic the SOA-C03 exam actually tests — organised the way operators work, not the way services are catalogued

Certification Overview

The AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer Associate (SOA-C03), formerly known as the SysOps Administrator Associate, is the most operations-focused of the three associate-level certifications. AWS renamed it when SOA-C03 replaced SOA-C02 on September 30, 2025. The new version has five domains instead of six (cost and performance optimization moved into the monitoring domain) and adds topics such as the CloudWatch agent on ECS and EKS, the AWS CDK, and enforcing compliance requirements.

This certification validates your ability to deploy, manage, operate, and troubleshoot scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant systems on AWS. If the Solutions Architect designs the system and the Developer builds the application, the CloudOps Engineer keeps everything running, monitored, and secure in production.

The SOA-C03 is often considered the most challenging associate exam because it tests practical troubleshooting skills. Questions frequently describe a broken or degraded scenario and ask you to identify the root cause and fix. This requires deep operational understanding, not just theoretical knowledge.

Who Should Take This Exam?

System administrators, cloud operations engineers, support engineers, and anyone responsible for day-to-day management of AWS workloads should consider this certification. If you're the person who gets paged when production breaks, this cert validates your skills.

It's also valuable for DevOps engineers who want to strengthen their operational fundamentals before pursuing the DevOps Engineer Professional certification. The SOA covers monitoring, security, and automation concepts that the DOP builds upon.

Exam Domains

1

Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization

22%

Setting up CloudWatch metrics, alarms, dashboards and the CloudWatch agent (on EC2, ECS and EKS), routing events with EventBridge, and fixing problems automatically with Systems Manager Automation runbooks and Lambda. It also absorbs the old cost and performance domain: right-sizing compute, choosing EBS volume types, speeding up S3 transfers, and tuning shared storage and RDS.

2

Reliability and Business Continuity

22%

Scaling compute and managed databases, adding caching with CloudFront or ElastiCache, and keeping workloads available with load balancer and Route 53 health checks and Multi-AZ deployments. Also covers automated backups with AWS Backup, restores that meet RTO and RPO targets, versioning, and disaster recovery strategies from backup and restore to active/active.

3

Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation

22%

Building AMIs and container images with EC2 Image Builder, managing resources with CloudFormation, the CDK or tools like Terraform, sharing them across accounts and Regions with StackSets and RAM, and diagnosing failed deployments. Includes automating routine operations with Systems Manager and event-driven automation with Lambda, S3 events and EventBridge.

4

Security and Compliance

16%

IAM features and multi-account controls (Organizations, SCPs, IAM Identity Center), troubleshooting access with CloudTrail, IAM Access Analyzer and the policy simulator, and enforcing compliance with Config conformance packs and Trusted Advisor checks. Also tests encryption at rest with KMS and in transit with ACM, storing secrets, and acting on Security Hub, GuardDuty and Inspector findings.

5

Networking and Content Delivery

18%

Configuring VPCs (subnets, route tables, NACLs, security groups, NAT and internet gateways), private connectivity with VPC endpoints, PrivateLink and peering, Route 53 routing policies and Resolver, and CloudFront or Global Accelerator. Troubleshooting carries a lot of weight: reading flow and access logs, fixing CloudFront caching and diagnosing hybrid connectivity.

Study Strategy

The best preparation for the SOA-C03 is hands-on operations experience. Set up CloudWatch alarms that trigger Lambda remediation functions. Configure VPC Flow Logs and analyze them. Create CloudFormation stacks and practice updating them. Set up Systems Manager to patch EC2 instances automatically.

Networking (18%) trips up many candidates. Make sure you can trace a packet through a VPC: from the internet, through a load balancer, to a private subnet instance, and explain what security groups and NACLs apply at each step. Practice troubleshooting "I can't connect to my instance" scenarios.

The troubleshooting aspect of this exam is unique among associate certs. Practice reading CloudWatch logs and metrics to identify issues. Our free practice exam includes scenario-based troubleshooting questions. Budget 4-8 weeks with active operational AWS experience.

Career Impact

Cloud operations and SRE roles are critical to every organization running on AWS, and this certification validates the operational skills employers need. CloudOps and SysOps roles typically pay $100K-$150K, with senior positions and SRE roles reaching $170K+.

This certification is particularly valuable in regulated industries (finance, healthcare, government) where operational controls, compliance monitoring, and security automation are non-negotiable requirements. It's also the most direct path to the DevOps Engineer Professional certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CloudOps Engineer the hardest AWS associate exam?

Many people consider it the most challenging associate exam because it tests operational troubleshooting — you need to diagnose broken scenarios, not just design new ones.

What changed with the rebrand from SysOps to CloudOps?

The new name arrived with a new exam version: SOA-C03 replaced SOA-C02 on September 30, 2025. It has five domains instead of six (the old Cost and Performance Optimization domain moved into Domain 1), weighted 22/22/22/16/18, and adds topics such as the CloudWatch agent on ECS and EKS, the AWS CDK and enforcing compliance requirements.

CloudOps Engineer or Developer Associate?

If you manage infrastructure and respond to incidents, take the CloudOps exam. If you write application code, take the Developer Associate. DevOps engineers may benefit from both.
